“Ready to Turn Your Impact into Reality?”
“Schedule a consultation to get a customized report for your business that includes a detailed plan and next steps.”
To use the calculator, input your project details into the “Project Scope” section. The calculator will automatically update the “Estimated Impact” in real-time. This provides an instant overview of your project’s potential environmental and social benefits.
How to Use the Calculator
-
Select Your Project’s Scale: Under “1. Project Scope,” enter the “Number of HEXA Towers” you plan to use. This is the primary input that drives all calculations.
-
Choose Your Produce: Select the “Target Produce Type” from the dropdown menu (Leafy Greens, Herbs, or Fruiting Vegetables). Each type has different yield and water usage data that affects the results.
-
Enter Food Source Distance: Input the “Current Food Source Distance (km)” your produce would typically travel. This value is used to calculate your specific Reduced Transport Carbon (CO2e), showing the environmental benefit of on-site farming.
-
Note: This input only affects the transport carbon metric and does not change the other environmental metrics (water, land, etc.).
-
How the Calculations Work
The calculator uses pre-defined data per HEXA Tower to project the overall impact of your farm. It compares the efficiency of VF@RM’s vertical farming system to conventional agriculture based on the number of towers you enter.
-
Reduced Transport Carbon (CO2e): This calculates the carbon emissions saved by eliminating the need to transport food over the specific distance you entered. This is a powerful metric that shows your project’s direct impact on reducing your carbon footprint.
Environmental Impact
- Water Saved Annually: This is calculated by comparing the very low water consumption of VF@RM’s closed-loop aeroponic system to the high water usage of conventional farming for the same amount of produce.
- Land Space Saved: Each HEXA Tower occupies only 3.9 sq ft but can grow the same number of plants (60 plants) as a conventional plot requiring 60 sq ft. The land saved is the difference between these two footprints, multiplied by the number of towers.
- Reduced Transport Carbon (CO2e): works by calculating the carbon emissions saved by eliminating the need to transport food over a specified distance, using a simplified factor for CO2e per kilometer.
- Land Use Efficiency: This shows how many times more efficient the tower is at using space. It’s a static ratio of 60 sq ft / 3.9 sq ft.
- Averted Nitrous Oxide Emissions (N2O): The calculator estimates the emissions saved by not using chemical-based fertilizers, which are a source of N2O in conventional farming. The total yield is multiplied by a small conversion factor to get this result.
Social & Governance Impact
- Fresh Produce Annually: This is a direct calculation of the total yield based on the number of towers and the pre-defined yield per plant for the produce type you select.
- Alignment with SDGs: An urban farming project contributes to a broad range of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by creating a more sustainable and equitable food system. It directly addresses SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by providing a local, secure source of fresh food while conserving water, which helps achieve SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). The project also supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by reducing food miles, minimizing waste, and transforming urban spaces. Furthermore, it takes Climate Action (SDG 13) by cutting down on transport emissions. On a social level, it promotes SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by increasing access to nutritious food, advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by serving as a learning tool, and supports SDG 5 (Gender Equality) through inclusive employment opportunities. Finally, it strengthens SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by encouraging collaboration among various stakeholders to build a more resilient food supply.
