For example, research has shown that climate factors could decrease rice yields—our main staple food—by a range of 13% to 80%. Furthermore, recent floods have caused vegetable prices to skyrocket and destroyed millions of ringgit in agricultural assets. Clearly, traditional farming methods are at the mercy of a volatile climate.

In addition to climate volatility, Malaysia struggles with food security due to a heavy reliance on imports, which reached RM78.7 billion in 2023. As a result, our nation is susceptible to global price shocks and supply chain disruptions. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been actively advocating for modern farming techniques like vertical farming to combat this reliance and enhance national self-sufficiency.

Mitigating Climate Impact
Because vertical farms are housed in controlled, indoor environments, they are completely immune to external weather events like floods, droughts, and heatwaves. In a very real sense, this creates climate-proof farms that guarantee a consistent, year-round harvest. This stability is crucial for ensuring a reliable food supply and protecting consumers from price spikes.
Conserving Our Resources
Beyond being climate-resilient, vertical farming is remarkably efficient with resources. These systems use a closed-loop hydroponic system that recirculates water, which consequently reduces water consumption by up to 98% compared to traditional farming. Moreover, by stacking crops vertically, they maximize space efficiency and help conserve Malaysia’s limited arable land for other purposes.
Strengthening Food Security
The ability to locate vertical farms in urban centers allows us to grow food right where it is consumed. This localization reduces “food miles,” which in turn lowers carbon emissions from transportation and shortens the supply chain. Thus, it helps build a resilient food network that is less vulnerable to import-related disruptions.
